Women In Motion renews its partnership with not-to-be-missed summer photography event, the Rencontres d'Arles. Rich in projects and events, the 2022 edition is the first where more than 50% of the works on display are by women. Through its partnership, the program supports several exhibitions: “Capturing Movement in Space,” by Babette Mangolte, “Cartographies Du Corps,” by Susan Meiselas and Marta Gentilucci, and “Bettina. A Poem of Perpetual Renewal,” by Bettina Grossman. Women In Motion also supports the publication of the book “A World History of Women Photographers” as well as “Anima”, a performance/installation by Noémie Goudal and Maëlle Poesy. Lastly, the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro Arles, supported by Women In Motion since its creation in 2016, is presented to the young Egyptian photographer, Amina Kadous.

In the heights of Cannes as part of the official Women In Motion dinner held in conjunction with the Festival, the eighth Women In Motion Award is presented to American actress and producer, Viola Davis. The Young Talent Award is given to Swedish director Ninja Thyberg.

As part of the Festival de Cannes’ 75th edition, Women In Motion hosts a new series of Talks with Viola Davis, Riley Keough, Gina Gammel, Clara Luciani, Mélanie Laurent, Déborah Lukumuena and Emily Yang. The Women In Motion podcast also has two new episodes, featuring actress, film director and artist, Charlotte Lebon, and actress and filmmaker, Luàna Bajrami.

Women In Motion supports the retrospective dedicated to American photographer, Vivian Maier, whose work was discovered posthumously at the turn of the twenty-first century. The exhibition moves across the globe, from Paris’s Musée du Luxembourg (September 2021-January 2022) and Turin’s Royal Museums (February-June 2022) to Seoul and its Ground Seesaw Seongsu gallery (August-November 2022).

During the 74th edition of the Festival de Cannes, the Women In Motion Talks welcomed Yamina Benguigui, Lou Doillon, Jodie Turner-Smith, Tilda Swinton and Regina King. All of them share their experiences and views of women’s representation in the film industry. New Women In Motion podcast episodes are also recorded in the studio. They feature producer Caroline Bonmarchand, director of photography Caroline Champetier, conductress Uèle Lamore, chief decorator Katia Wyszkop and screenwriter Léa Mysius.

The first Women In Motion LAB launched in 2019 in association with the Rencontres d’Arles highlights the contribution made by women to the global history of photography. The project, led by women historians, Luce Lebart and Marie Robert, draws on research carried out by 160 women experts in photography from around the world. It resulted in the publication of a book entitled A world history of photography, published by Textuel.

A second season of the Women In Motion podcast is recorded at the 72nd Festival de Cannes. This series focuses on female figures in the film industry whose professions are often largely unknown to the general public. Producers, film critics, casting directors as well as agents, offer their perspectives on what it’s like working in an industry that is still largely male-dominated: how they’ve made a name for themselves, the difficulties of taking on leadership roles, and where they’ve found support.
